Simple gifts of Christmas

An angel sings....

Christmas is coming

Slowly but surely Christmas is arriving.  We have the tree up (but are lacking wrapped packages according to Maria), the majority of the baking is complete and the house is decorated.  I have two days left at work before a two week break and the start of a menu plan for the big day (I will be cooking the turkey again this year - which I love doing).  This is actually quite a lot given the November we had in this house.  Both kids and parents were sick (coxsackie virus or "hand, foot and mouth" for babes and Aaron - which I would not wish upon my worst enemy; a cold for me).  Aaron also quit his newest job and went back into the steel building manufacturing/assembly business...but this time as a private contractor.  This was no shortage of stress and worry for me, self-employment makes me nervous, but Aaron has been busy since day one and has two companies lining up work for him well into the new year (as well as others asking for his card).

Maria just participated in her second Sunday School Christmas concert.  She was an angel this year, and although a pre-production accident had her in tears for the first half of the concert (she caught her finger in the door just before showtime), she was smiles and singing by her part.  William continues to grow and his vocabulary is, finally (speech-language pathologist Mommy breathes a sigh of relief), growing too.  His favorite word of the moment is "no" which he uses with great volume and expression.

For those of you on my Christmas card mailout you will notice that I did not include a letter this year.  The reason for this is that many of you follow our blog and have a pretty good idea of what is going on in our lives from time to time.  But just to recap I will provide a brief summary of this year for us:

2010 was a year of ups and downs for our family.  Health concerns for myself brought a series of tests in early 2010. I received an initial diagnosis of ulcerative colitis in January 2010 (if this is the first you are hearing of this, this is because I have not been candidly talking about it until now, but I have come to a point where discussion = acceptance = healing).  I was placed on medications, but these meds and diet monitoring have not been having the effect one would like to see and so more tests are coming in 2011 as my diagnosis is tentatively being upgraded to Crohn's colitis and I have been placed on different medications.  So if we are ever visiting with any of you and I avoid certain foods, please don't be offended, I am still trying to figure out what foods are my friends and what foods to avoid - it is an ongoing battle, but I am getting much closer to answers in these areas.

Aaron was still away from work, a lot, in the early part of 2010.  He was then moved into the shop at Stealth Acoustical in April, just in time for me to go back to work.  This move was to keep him closer to home, but instead led to his being let go in June.  However, as mentioned above, he is now working as a private contractor and is happier, home more and able to set his own hours (somewhat), so things are looking up in that front.

Maria and William spend 4 days a week at a dayhome (two doors down from home) and love it.  For this reason I chose not to place Maria in preschool this year, but she does attend Sunday School regularly and loves that as well.  William turned one and a month later broke his leg.  But he turned out to be a real trooper and started walking soon after the cast was off in July.  You can hardly keep up with him now.

That about sums up the highlights of this past year.  We are hoping for a great 2011 and looking forward to celebrating the holidays with wonderful family and friends.

Happy Halloween

What a great Halloween we had this year.  We started by carving pumpkins last night with Maria, and despite Mommy wanting to make something fun or cute, she insisted on a scary pumpkin, settling for the "Pumpkin King".  Then, for the big night tonight, we got the kids dolled up (literally for Maria) and headed out for some trick-or-treating.  Maria (or Cinderella) was quite into it this year, saying the appropriate "trick-or-treat" and "thank-you" at each house.  What really surprised me though was how quickly William (or Gus the mouse) caught on!  After just three houses William was running up the driveways, holding out his bag (and opening it or simply showing people via pointing that the candy was to go inside), and then toddling off to the next house.  I can only imagine what it will be like next year!
